This novel had a slow start but picked up the pace very quickly. It is a sports academy where you get in by having rich parents, or a scholarship, which is very hard to get. Enter Travis and Jake Reed, sons of the sports legend who runs the academy. This had to be my dream book in every way possible.
The pool to her right came complete with cabanas and an attendant. There are only two ways in: money — and lots of it — or enough talent to earn a scholarship. Even the plot was bad. The second year, she cried in front of the recruiter. The Academy: Game On is about a top notch sporting school.
Meet the players: Nicole: a tennis star who feels threatened by Maya although she'd never admit it. With former player Monica Seles being the author, I thought I would be reading about court rivalries and young players chasing their dreams of becoming pros, but most of the focus was on teenage drama off the court. She lets everyone walk all over her. Our main character, Maya has earned a scholarship to come and train with the best. There are only two short scenes in the entire novel that involve Maya practicing tennis.
As Maya walked up the stairs to her dorm room, she felt not only incredibly anxious, but also incredibly alone. In fact I would have to say more if you enjoyed Mythos Academy or Oh My Gods by Tera Lynn Childs minus the Gods part then you will enjoy The A This is one book where I loved the cover and could not wait to get started as I had requested this from Netgalley. And by the looks of it, Oz didn't come cheap. I cannot wait to read the next installments - that is if Monica Seles continues the books and develops The Academy into a series. And of course this cover allows you to imagine the characters for yourself.
Jake: Travis's younger brother — and the bad boy of the school. The sports academy in the book is just a cardboard setting, and the plot of humble girl getting taken in by the backstabbing rich kid and swooning over poorly developed love interests could honestly have taken place at any kind of school. Fountains and flowers dotted every lawn. When you think of a golf player you think a man or women who is calm and collected, but they all dress alike. If feels like this book can't seem to decide what it is.
Enter Nicole - she is the current reigning Tennis star , when Maya comes along - will her spot be threatened? They were spotless, with spotless white golf club covers, and were propped up in a spotless white golf bag. And after a strong showing in the semi-finals at a tennis competition, Maya seems pretty focused. In my opinion, the most interesting character. Young tennis star Maya's dreams have finally come true! The author really kept me guessing until the very end. It's tough when everybody is just as good, or better, than you are.

Maya is a relate able character that tries to find the best in people and is focused on her dream. Overwhelmed by the different lifestyles of the rich and famous, she is way out of her middle class league and feeling insecure. It did have a good conclusion however, with Maya taking control and leading to what will be a second book in the series. However, I really wished there was a much larger focus on tennis. At the Academy, everything is based on how much money you have and stereotypes. It could be an easy guilty pleasure. Two: it was written by tennis superstar Monica Seles, who is one of my tennis idols, along with Billie Jean King, Li Na and Dominika Cibulkova.
